A project by Ricardo Valentim. Collaboration with Rita d’Ávila Cachado (anthropologist)

Growth and Culture is a conference project of Ricardo Valentim. It stems from the homonymous book of Margaret Mead and Frances Cooke Macgregor, with photographs taken by Gregory Bateson. In this essay, the authors present a study made on Bali’s society, by using 4.000 pictures out of the 25.000 taken between 1936 and 1939 in the spot.
The work created by Ricardo Valentim tries to use the same ethnographic model, but, instead of using a certain specific culture, Valentim uses different places in which he moves and/or travels. In this event, there will be 30 new slides, that employ the same designation and graphic techniques used in the original book, but that update the concept of performance and cultural development in today’s society.
